Celebrate Tiki Week

Downtown/Southtown brings the island culture to San Antonio.

Just because you’re not on vacation this week doesn’t mean you can’t indulge (at least a little) in the tropical tiki culture. During Tiki Week, which starts today, Tuesday, June 24, and runs through Sunday, June 29, five Southtown bars and restaurants—in partnership with the United States Bartenders Guild—are infusing the tiki vibe into the Alamo City. Houston Eaves, bar manager of El Mirador Mexican restaurant, says San Antonio’s Tiki Week is a fun way to let remember the Tiki culture that was popular in ’30s, ’40s and ’50s. “[Tiki week] gives us a chance to go outside our norm. It gives us a way to have fun embracing island culture and engage with customers,” Eaves says. “It’s just really fun. I think that’s what tiki is about—just having fun.” Get your lei ready. Here’s a week’s worth of tiki fun.

Tuesday

Kick off San Antonio Tiki Week at The Brooklynite, which has been celebrating Tiki Week since 2012. Be on site for the launch of the bar’s new tiki-themed menu, and then stick around for a parking lot pig roast by Tailgate Bistro. Tuesday, 8 p.m., The Brooklynite, 516 Brooklyn Avenue, 210-444-0707, thebrooklynitesa.com

Wednesday

El Mirador merges tiki with south-of-the-border flavor at its Agave Tiki Night. An evening tiki happy hour features guest bartender Mindy Kucan, of Portland’s Hale Pele bar. “The happy hour is a cross-between Mexican culture, with the agave, and over-the top fresh fruit garnishes that is very tiki,” says Eaves. Wednesday, seminar, 3-5 p.m.; happy hour, 5-7 p.m., El Mirador, 722 St. Marys St., 210-225-9444, elmiradorrestaurant.com

Thursday

Hot Joy will present a full night of tiki specials, including a fresh cocktail menu and specialty late night eats. Thursday, 5 p.m.-2 a.m., Hot Joy, 1014 S. Alamo St., 210-368-9324, hotjoysa.com

Sunday

Cap off the tiki celebrations with the “Bacardi Blender Bowl”, a bartending contest hosted by Blue Box. Watch bartenders from Austin and San Antonio compete in a cocktail competition, with one winner taking home a state-of-the-art Vita-Mix Blender, courtesy of the United States Bartenders’ Guild. Drinks will be judged on taste, creativity, showmanship and garnish presentation. Sunday, noon-3 p.m., Blue Box Bar, 312 Pearl Pkwy., 210-227-2583, blueboxbar.com

Tuesday-Sunday

The Esquire Tavern is bringing some island flare to the River Walk with a special Tiki-themed menu that’s available all week. Stop in at the bar for a drink, and take a token from Tiki Week home with one of their signature Tiki mugs. Ongoing, The Esquire Tavern, 155 E. Commerce St., 210-222-2521, esquiretavern-sa.com
