Downtown/Southtown brings the island culture to San Antonio.
Just because you’re not on vacation this week doesn’t mean you can’t indulge (at least a little) in the tropical tiki culture. During Tiki Week, which starts today, Tuesday, June 24, and runs through Sunday, June 29, five Southtown bars and restaurants—in partnership with the United States Bartenders Guild—are infusing the tiki vibe into the Alamo City. Houston Eaves, bar manager of El Mirador Mexican restaurant, says San Antonio’s Tiki Week is a fun way to let remember the Tiki culture that was popular in ’30s, ’40s and ’50s. “[Tiki week] gives us a chance to go outside our norm. It gives us a way to have fun embracing island culture and engage with customers,” Eaves says. “It’s just really fun. I think that’s what tiki is about—just having fun.” Get your lei ready. Here’s a week’s worth of tiki fun.
Kick off San Antonio Tiki Week at The Brooklynite, which has been celebrating Tiki Week since 2012. El Mirador merges tiki with south-of-the-border flavor at its Agave Tiki Night. An evening tiki happy hour features guest bartender Mindy Kucan, of Portland’s Hale Pele bar. “The happy hour is a cross-between Mexican culture, with the agave, and over-the top fresh fruit garnishes that is very tiki,” says Eaves.
