What to shop for (everything), how to save even more and why SA’s is even better than others in Texas.
Fashion fiends channeled tech geeks and movie buffs this week, camping overnight to be among the first to shop at H&M at The Shops at La Cantera. When the doors opened today, 1,363 people were waiting in line at the first H&M in San Antonio, the ninth in Texas. With a simple business concept focusing on fashion and quality for the affordable prices, H&M is sure to fit in well with San Antonians and tourists alike. Here’s what you need to know about the retail giant.
1. There’s something for everyone (and therefore be prepared for crowds)
H&M carries clothes for men, women and children. They also have specialty lines that include maternity, lingerie, plus size, sport, swim and more. The children collection ranges from newborn to 14-year-olds. Men can find casual wear and suit-and-tie attire. The women’s department offers everything from club attire to work wear to casual wear. Jewelry, hair accessories and shoes are also available in their “store within a store” departments.
2. Affordable fashion is even more affordable for those that give back
In spring of 2012, H&M launched a clothing recycling program within all their stores to help reduce their impact on the environment. Customers who bring a bag of unwanted clothes to the store will receive a 15 percent-off voucher for each bag. “A lot of unwanted clothing, clothing that cannot be repurposed or is not in good condition, ends up in landfills,” Says Nicole Christie, H&M spokeswoman. “It actually also sometimes ends up in landfills in third-world countries. We want to assume responsibility as a global company.”
3. Look for designer names in the “Trend” department, a special inclusion in SA
H&M’s the “Trend” collection features higher-end, higher-fashion clothing pieces at slightly higher prices for customers who are eager to stay on top of trends. Some of these collections include collaboration with big-name fashion designers—including Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld, who was the first designer to partner in 2004 and Alexander Wang, who will debut an H&M collection this fall. It’s a big deal for San Antonio to have this department, which is reserved for high-fashion cities. The only other Texas store that carries it is North Park in Dallas.
4. San Antonio should not be insulted by being one of the last major Texas cities to get an H&M
A lot of consideration goes into where exactly H&M will open. “We are really specific about the location, meaning not just the city or the neighborhood, it’s also about the property. And it’s also about where we are on that property,” says Christie. “We will wait and wait and wait until the perfect space opens up.”
5. Downtowners have to journey up I-10 for now, but a second location is coming…
H&M announced on June 18 that it will open a second San Antonio location in Rivercenter Mall in the spring of 2015. The store will have about 30,000-square-feet of shopping space.
